The Unity Theatre plays host to a variety of shows this December. Feast your eyes amongst these brilliant shows:

Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf: 2 Dec 2016, – 7 Jan 2017 (various times)

Unity Theatre and Action Transport Theatre Company are very pleased to announce their co-production this year will be Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf. The family-friendly Christmas show, perfect for ages 5+ and their families, runs from 2 December – 7 January. The production continues Unity Theatre’s successful partnership with Action Transport Theatre and the show promises to offer the usual fun and laughter with music, dance and song.

Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf is a bold re-telling of the well-known classic tale, Little Red Riding Hood and will explore the thrill of adventure versus the safety of staying on the path.

Co-director and Artistic Director of Action Transport Theatre, Nina Hajiyianni said:

“Little Red promises to be a bold and highly theatrical re-telling of the well-known classic tale. The show will build on the success of previous years where we have seen familiar stories told with a twist. I’m delighted with the cast we have chosen to work with.

We are very interested in the idea of the thrill of adventure and unknown versus the safety and familiarity of the ‘path’ and how irresistible straying can be, especially for children. Also in the story mix: is the tension between mankind and nature; are the wolves really the villains in a world where the woodcutter is destroying the forest? And is Grandma the trophy hunter really sick?”

Unity Theatre Artistic Director and CEO, Matthew Linley said:

“We’re really delighted to be working with this talented group of actors to create Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf! What’s particularly exciting about this cast is their extraordinary breadth of experience – from the West End to clowning and alternative theatre. It’s great to to be working with both new and familiar faces – Harvey featured in our own co-production Bardolph’s Box, and Simone was in Action Transport’s highly successful STATik! Together with Nina and Kevin I can’t wait to see what our cast come up with.”

Splatterdays in the Dark Dark Wood: 10, 17, 23 & 24 December, 12.45 – 2.15pm

Unity Theatre’s regular Saturday Splatterdays sessions are filled to the brim with making, acting storytelling and play sessions. This Christmas the Splatts team will be getting creative in the setting of the Dark Dark Wood and all the family will be able to take part. This is a pay what you like event which complements Unity’s Christmas show, Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf.

The Aleph in the Dark Dark Wood: Fri 9 December, 8pm

THE ALEPH evoke music from the distant past to the far future to create a spectral, alternative present.

Comprising Benjamin Fair and Jonathan Hering, THE ALEPH has performed in venues such as Tate Britain, Beacons Festival, Liverpool’s Kazimier club, the University of Liverpool and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry.

Their original film & music work The Good Eater – made in collaboration with filmmaker Craig Sinclair – explores concepts of childhood, memory and the filters that we apply with retrospection. Summoning the particular dread that children can attach to the seemingly most innocuous elements of everyday life, the work probes the complex fears that lurk inside us all.

Jason Singh in the Dark Dark Wood: Tue 13 December, 8pm

Jason Singh is a musician, composer, beat boxer, sound artist, producer and performer. He works across all art forms and his work is an on-going exploration and collaboration between the voice, body and music technology. Singh collaborates with a wide variety of organisations – he has been artist in residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum and in 2017 he will be resident artist in Hull as part of the Hull 2017 City of Culture and PRS New Music Biennial.

Jason will be creating an “all vocal” sound environment in the Dark Dark Wood that is based on the fantastical and imaginary strange forestry world of creatures and textures.

Patrick Dineen in the Dark Dark Wood: Thu 15 December, 8pm

Our regular Christmas show collaborator Patrick Dineen will use The Dark, Dark Wood to continue his own exploration of music inspired by dark fairy tales. Patrick says “I’m excited by the possibility of writing and developing music which thematically links to the music I’m writing for Little Red, I’ve always been fascinated by the darker side of fairy tales, and this project will allow me to go deeper and further into the imagination.”

Kinicho Cosmos Installation

During the Dark Dark Wood, Unity Theatre will be hosting a 20-speaker immersive sound system, Kinicho Cosmos, which will play pieces composed by The Aleph, Jason Singh and Patrick Dineen. This will be an immersive sound installation in the Unity Lounge.

Unity Youth Theatre Performance – Sat 17 December

Unity Youth theatre will be creating a special Christmas performance inspired by the setting of the Dark Dark Wood and written by Liverpool playwright, Esther Wilson. (Ten Tiny Toes, Tony Teardrop, Unprotected).
