SXSW witnessed the premiere of Life, Daniel Espona’s new space thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

The reviews look promising, but there is another of Gyllenhaal’s films that has travelled through the years to hold a special place in 2017. Donnie Darko, the dark story of teenage angst and time travel.

The movie Donnie Darko has now reached the age of the film's main protagonist, also named Donnie Darko and played by a baby faced Gyllenhaal.

Alongside Gyllenhaal, the cast consists of similar big names such as Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze and Seth Rogan.

Donnie Darko is an early example of a film that built a cult fan base upon it's DVD release.

You might ask what it is that makes Donnie Darko such a cult hit. It could be the all star cast, it could be the eerie setting of a sleepy town, it could be the fantastic musical cues.

Or maybe it's the storyline that is renowned for leaving the audience wondering what the ending actually means. Maybe it's a combination of all of these things resulting in a magical movie.

With the release of the Director’s Cut, Donnie Darko lost some of its ambiguity. Fan theories had been spreading across the Internet like wildfire but suddenly the ending became a lot clearer.

To celebrate the movie's 15th anniversary, Purple Revolver are hosting a special screening at The Merchant on Wednesday 29th March.

Enjoy a special Donnie Darko drink and pizza menu while you soak the film up on the big screen.

Based on the philosophy of time travel, Donnie Darko happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or you might say he was in the right place at the right time, depending on your philosophy.

The films plot is based around a fictional book, The Philosophy of Time Travel, written by the character Roberta Sparrow. According to the book’s philosophy we understand that a rip in the Primary Universe has occurred, spawning a secondary Tangent Universe, which is where the majority of the film takes place.

Donnie’s infamous and ultra creepy guide Frank, the Nightmare-esque rabbit, tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 48 minutes and 12 seconds unless the tear in the universe is fixed.

In a sense the world does end, resulting in a death at the end which could have been prevented, or not depending on your philosophy once again.

We could talk more about the philosophy of time travel included in the film and argue either way but sometimes it's better to make your own mind up.

What better way than to attend Purple Revolver’s screening of Donnie Darko. The screening will take place Wednesday 29th March at The Merchant on Slater St, Liverpool City centre, party begins at 7pm.

With special deals on drinks and pizza it is a must for any members of the Donnie Darko cult. Come along, watch the movie, celebrate Donnie Darko’s birthday and prepare to have your mind blown with an epic tale of time travel and fate.
