The Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, is helping to design a Simpson’s mural in Springfield Oregon.
According to the Register Guard newspaper, the mural will be painted on the side of the city’s Emerald Art Centre, with Groening, who is originally from Portland, having a key input.
Springfield spokesman Niel Laudati said that it will feature Homer lying in a hammock, Bart climbing a tree, Marge painting and Lisa and Maggie riding a bike. The mural is expected to be completed in September.
The location of Springfield, which has been a long-running joke with fans as a number of US cities share the name.
In 2012 it was revealed to be named after Springfield, Oregon. Groening said that: “The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show Father Knows Best took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown,”
Groening added: “When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”
Springfield, Vermont beat the Oregon town to host the worldwide premiere of The Simpsons Movie in 2007, but the Willamette Valley town found other ways to show their own ties of the show with a bar called Moe’s Tavern.
Matt, who also created Futurama, wants to leave his mark on the mural saying: . “I plan to sneak up in the middle of the night and sign the mural,” he said in a statement. “I hope I don’t get arrested.”
