Whats next for Dexter after season 8 finale

With many fans left disappointed by the finale of Dexter, new speculation has surfaced that Dexter could, at some point in the distant future, be set for a come back.

In a recent interview John Goldwyn said: "Showtime refused to let Dexter die. They won’t let us kill him, Showtime was very clear about that.

"When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, ‘Just to be clear, he’s going to live.'"

In the interview Goldwyn told how difficult it was for them to find a fitting end for the serial killer, with Dexter's creators conscious to please his loyal fans.

The show’s writers always had a difficult task finding the perfect end for their unique brand of serial killer, just as AMC were trying to find the best way to conclude their smash hit Breaking Bad.

He added: "People have a relationship with Dexter, even if it doesn't have the size and the ferocity of the fan base for Breaking Bad - it has a very core loyal following."

Showtime have flirted for some time with the idea of creating a spin off show for Dexter and many suggest this as the reason that Dexter didn't get his just deserts at the end of season 8.

Many fans argue that the show's quality has been in decline in later seasons and a spin off isn'y warranted.

Rumours of a spin off began with an interview with Showtime chief David Nevins, who refused to rule out the possibility. The rumour gained weight when Nevins signed a two-year deal with Dexter show runner Scott Buck, but the nature of this project is still unknown.

With the Finale to Dexter over and done with, we are now left speculating as to who would most likely command the spin off.

As a fan of Dexter, the fear is that none of the characters left are strong enough to become a main protagonist.

One option would be to focus on Miami Metro Homicide as a team, but this could be a little bit too much CSI: Miami.

And, where would Dexter fit into all this? If Showtime has kept him alive for a reason, would bringing him back in a spin off (or at all) just undermine the finale?

Perhaps a 30 min sit-com focused around Masuka and his new found family would be the answer, although this might be Comedy Central territory and not Showtime.
