The Karate Kid remake has caused a backlash of controversy from fans and reviewers, outraged at the pointless differences from the original film and what they consider 'poor casting.'

Internet forums are awash with rage with fans of the original film calling for a boycott against the film and claiming the film is 'unoriginal, unprovoked, pointless and pathetic.'

Comments include “The Karate Kid is a classic. You do not remake a classic. This movie, quite obviously, will *beep* SUCK.”, “Let this crap rot in the bottom of box office.” and “Leave the original alone! Damn Re-Makes!!!!!” As you can see, IMDB users are not pleased with the film as of yet.

To be released in July, the fourth sequel to the much loved film ‘The Karate Kid’ will star Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan and is a direct remake of the original Karate Kid film from 1984.
Dre Parker is a 12-year-old kid who is popular in his hometown of Detroit, but his mother's latest career move means a long-haul trip to China.

He immediately falls for his new classmate Mei Ying, the two really hit it off but cultural differences make their friendship awkward. Even worse, Dre attracts the attention of the class bully, Cheng.

Dre knows only some Karate while his classmates are experts in Kung Fu, and Cheng puts "The Karate Kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of Kung Fu. As Mr. Han teaches Dre that Kung Fu is not all about offense, but maturity and composure, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Many problems are noticeable from the trailer such as the fact that jokes and nostalgic sections from the original film have been taken and screwed around and are now no longer funny or original. Also, it seems odd that even though the film is named ‘The Karate Kid’, the film is based around Kung Fu.

However, sources such as the American Website “MSNBC” show that Jaden has been perceived as good for the role and that he is set to win the award for Breakthrough Male Star of the year.

We’ll just have to wait and see whether the new Karate Kid can win over the nostalgic fans of old and attract new ones at the same time.
