After a long time of anticipation, the first official trailer has been released online for the new live-action adaptation of Dune.
Based on the seminal 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert, Dune tells the story of a brilliant and gifted young man called Paul Atreides, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people, as malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planets exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, capable of unlocking humanities greatest potential.
The new movie is directed by BAFTA and Academy Award winner Denis Villeneuve, whose credits include Prisoners (2013), Sicario (2015), Arrival (2016) and the epic masterpiece Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
The brand new 3-minute trailer, accompanied by Pink Floyd’s Eclipse, gives us a taste of what’s to come in the upcoming movie, by offering glimpses of spectacular landscapes and the main and supporting characters. It even gives us a fantastic look at the gargantuan sandworms of Arrakis.
The new movie boasts a stellar cast, including Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Jason Mamoa as Duncan Idaho, and Dave Bautista as Glossu ‘Beast’ Rabban, alongside Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac and Stellan Skarsgård.
The movie is also set to include a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, which promises to be equally as epic as his previous collaboration with Villeneuve.
Even though the story has been adapted before with the so-so 1984 movie by David Lynch starring Kyle MacLachlin Sting, Dune (2020) is planned as the first of a two part adaptation of the novel, covering roughly the first half of the book. Part 2 has yet to be officially announced at the time of writing.
The movie looks spectacular, with a fantastic cast, and with the movie in the right hands, it is definitely one to watch out for when it is finally released.
Dune is currently slated for a cinema release on 18th December 2020.
