A few years have passed since the Heroes in a Half Shell last appeared on the big screen. Now we have news of a brand new CG reboot being developed from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon and Seth Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures.
The Ninja Turtles have been appearing on the big screen since 1990, with nearly all of their movies being live-action. Only one movie was CG, and that came out in 2007 from Warner Bros. with no continuation or further developments.
According to Deadline, Seth Rogen and his Point Grey Pictures partners, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, are developing a brand new animated movie, with Jeff Rowe (Gravity Falls) as director and a script from Brendan O’Brian (Bad Neighbours).
Brian Robbins, the current president of Nickelodeon, said: “Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humour and action that’s an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property.”
He went on to add that he was “looking forward to seeing what they do”, and that he “knows Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction”.
The upcoming reboot will be the first theatrically CG-animated release from the Nickelodeon Animation Studio.
Nickelodeon have also teamed up with Netflix in a separate deal, to create an original 2D animated film based on the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
Whether the new film will be geared towards a younger audience or have a bit more of an edge, like the best movies and TV shows, remains to be seen. But the prospect of a new movie is surely to be welcomed news to fans.
The Untitled TMNT Reboot has no release date.
