Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise hit with audiences after the initial backlash to the character’s design, forcing the release date to be pushed back. The movie became the second highest grossing film of 2020, and with this success, it appears as though we will indeed be seeing Sonic on the big screen again.

According to a report by Variety, Paramount Pictures has officially greenlighted a sequel for the blue hedgehog, with Jeff Fowler returning to direct alongside Pat Casey and Josh Miller as returning writers.

Sonic the Hedgehog was based on the Japanese video game series that began in 1991. The movie saw Sonic living a lonely life on Earth until he teams up with a local sheriff (Tom Marsden) to stop Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who is after Sonic’s powers.

It was unclear whether a sequel would happen, but was brilliantly teased in both a mid and post-credit scene, and thankfully the story won’t be left there.

At this point in time, no further details have been revealed aside from the return of Ben Schwartz as the Blue Blur.

The sequel is likely to focus on the introduction of Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey), who briefly appeared towards the end of the first film, and the return of Robotnik, who was previously seen going insane on an alien world.

James Marsden and Jim Carrey are expected to return, but no official confirmation has been given, as the film is in very early stages of development, and no official start date for production due to the pandemic.

We are looking forward to seeing how this one turns out, and based on the first film, we don’t have much to worry about.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is coming soon.
