Scream 5 - David Arquette and Neve Campbell Return?

Fans of the original Scream trilogy were divided on the addition of Scream 4 in 2011, giving it a 55% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that hasn’t stopped Scream 5 from being given the go ahead.

After Wes Craven, director of the first four instalments of the cult favourite horror franchise, passed away in 2015, the project seemed unlikely to happen. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and Tyler Gillett, the directors behind last years comedy-horror ‘Ready or Not’ are now attached to the project. There are some familiar faces coming along in the new addition too.

David Arquette is ready to reprise his role of Dewey Riley, a character we all remember from the first four movies. The actor has said he is ‘thrilled to be playing Dewey again’, adding that he looks forward to ‘honouring Wes Craven’s legacy’, after recognising how large a part of life Scream has been for himself, and for fans.

As well as Arquette, Neve Campbell, series lead and fan favourite Sidney Prescott, has confirmed she’s been involved in conversations about returning to the franchise. This hints that the movie will not be a hard reboot of the series, as some fans had previously speculated.

Kevin Williamson, writer of the original Scream movie, and most of the sequels, is also on board as an executive producer.

Between Scream 4 having been released almost a decade ago, and the Scream TV series that launched on MTV, concluding following years of delays on VH1, the question of if the public really want a new Scream instalment is a fair one. With a passionate cult following, the general public may not love the movie, but its sure to be appreciated by many people.

Plans are currently to begin filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, later this year, once it is safe to do so. This leaves fans most likely looking forward to a Halloween 2021 release.
