Back in 2007, Sony released the first in a new gaming franchise, Uncharted. A movie was announced shortly afterwards, but unfortunately got stuck in development hell.
Now It sounds like everything is finally starting to move forward, with new casting details and a new director for the project.
The Uncharted franchise has been one of Sony’s most popular game releases, following Nathan Drake, a treasure hunting everyman, as he scours the globe to uncover various historical mysteries, including El Dorado and Shambhala.
Originally, David O. Russell (American Hustle) was set to direct the film, but dropped out due to “creative differences”. The film has seen a wide number of directors attached, including Neil Burger, Shawn Levy and Travis Knight, all of who walked from the project, making the possibility of the film seem more and more unlikely.
However, it was recently announced that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will now be in the director’s chair with a script from Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, and production is set to begin sometime this month.
On top of this, we also have confirmation that this will be an origin story, starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home) as Nathan Drake, which was originally announced back in 2017.
At the time of the original announcement, Mark Wahlberg (Mile 22) was heavily rumoured to be playing Drake, but it has now been confirmed that he will be starring in the film as Sully, Nathan’s cigar smoking friend and mentor.
Wahlberg has recently spoken to Collider about the upcoming adventure movie, confirming that production begins very soon and that the story will focus on Nathan and Sully meeting, which was addressed in a sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (2011). He even likened it to Indiana Jones, which the Uncharted franchise is heavily inspired by.
More recently, it was officially announced that Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) will be making an appearance. It is unclear who he will be playing at this point in time, but it is rumoured that he will be playing the lead antagonist.
Also cast are Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Sophia Ali (The Wilds) in undisclosed roles. There has been some speculation that they could be playing Elena Fisher and Chloe Frazer, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
It’s good to see this project finally starting to move forward. Whether this is worth the wait remains to be seen, but if it is anything like the Nathan Fillion led fan film, it surely will.
Uncharted will be released 5th March 2021.
