The first official teaser trailer has been unveiled for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse by Sony Animation. Fans of the web-slinger have been treated to three big screen incarnations over the past 15 years, with Toby Maguire’s trilogy, Andrew Garfield’s outings and currently Marvel Studios Tom Holland.

All of the previous Spider-Man movie featured Peter Parker, who has been under the mask since 1962. This new film looks to change that by introducing the general audience to one of the best alternate Spider-Men: Miles Morales, who was introduced in Ultimate Fallout #4 in 2011 after Peter Parker died in battle.

Miles will be voiced by the talented Donald Glover, who was most recently seen in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as Aaron Davis, who coincidentally happens to be Miles Morales’ uncle, and will be seen as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story.

As hinted at by the title, we may be getting more Spider-Men than previously expected. There have been hundreds of incarnations over the years, including Noir, 2099, Spider-Ham (yes, really), Ben Reilly and many, many more.

The majority of Spider-Verse comics and games, such as the incredible Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, all revolve around a mysterious character who calls herself Madam Web, who brings together different Spider-Men to defeat dimension altering villains.

Shattered Dimensions featured Mysterio as the main antagonist, but the rest of the game was littered with multiple villains from Spidey’s rogue’s gallery such as Hammerhead, Kraven, Vulture and Carnage.

The teaser does its job of just teasing the plot of the film and animation style, with no specific details other than it featuring Miles swinging around New York in some of the most dynamic shots ever created for a Spider-Man movie.

Sony Animation has done some very impressive movies over the years including The LEGO Movie, but they have had a couple of duds, such as The Emoji Movie. Let’s hope this is closer to The LEGO franchise.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released on 14th December 2018.
