An Oversized Oeuvre
Oversized jewels are showing up everywhere from Chanel’s unexpected giant pearl necklace to Saint Lauren’s stunning architectural choker. Chunky woven gold chains, playful padlocks, origami-inspired shapes, and a cascade of verdant green gems each delivered spotlight-stealing moments at Balmain, Rodarte, Marni and Christian Dior, respectively. But the supersized trend isn’t just limited to necklaces; it also appears in bracelets, earrings and rings. Bottega Veneta’s gleaming monocle was a standout on both necks and wrists, as were Roberto Cavalli’s breathtaking birds of paradise.
On the Fringe
While fringe and its good friends feathers and tassels made a showing in 2013 in homage to the glittering Great Gatsby, 2014 sees even bigger play, thanks to Chloe’s fringe-bedecked wedge-heeled mules, Dries Van Noten’s Native American-inspired bag (also featuring on-trend ethnic embroidery) and Derek Lam’s eye-catching fringe scarves. In the jewelry world, the trend has evolved to incorporate everything from feminine beads and pearls like the classic pearl necklace from Michael Hill to edgier cord, suede and chains.
The Bold and the Beautiful
While black and white, along with an icy pastel palette including red-hot lavender, made a big style statement on the runways, saturated, technicolor brights serve as brilliant harbingers of spring. On the runways, Alberta Ferretti’s fiery sunset palette included a happy pair of coral danglers, while Celine showed off boxy, graphic pieces in sunny yellow and cheerful green. And who could overlook Kenzo’s bold blue spiral necklace? Prabal Gurung’s sweet lemon yellow floral ring, meanwhile, nodded at another hot spring trend: pretty floral prints.
Throwback Thursday…and Everyday
Spring’s 2014 also offers a nostalgic tour through the decades. 80s and 90s era pieces take us back to the age of big earrings and paint splatters, seen everywhere from J. Crew to Tory Burch to Celine. Prepsters, meanwhile, will enjoy the chance to show off their loaferlove. Ralph Lauren’s spring 2014 show had a decidedly 60s vibe thanks to psychedelic hues and a black-strapped watch with fetching retro-style numbers sure to catch the attention of the horologically haute. Dolce & Gabbana took things way back with Greek history-inspired beaten gold medallions earrings.
Talismania
Talisman jewelry can be worked by urban warriors and suburban soccer moms alike in search of astrological inspiration. Valentino sent models down the runway in a parade of chunky gold zodiac-themed pendants — all with chains wrapped thrice around the neck — as well as bracelets and rings featuring gleaming mythical beasts. Delfina Delettrez’s surreal talismans, splendid with fur and crystal embellishments, were on dramatic display at Fendi, while Alexander McQueen embraced gladiator chic with fierce layered gold cuffs reminiscent of battle armor, galea-inspired headwear and serious leather boots.
