The lead singer of a British electro-pop band has jumped to his death at a Belgian rock festival.

Charles Haddon of London band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool climbed to the top of a mast behind the main stage just after his band’s live set at the Pukkelpop festival and threw himself off.

The 22-year-old was pronounced dead on Friday night and district attorney Marc Rubens said police were treating the death as a suicide.

An organiser of the Pukkelpop festival said: "After performing with his band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, singer Charles Haddon decided to take his own life,"

"Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and friends."

The remaining band members released a statement saying they were "so deeply saddened" by the tragedy and thanked fans for their messages of support.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool were due to perform at the Frequency Festival in Austria this weekend and were to start a UK headline tour in Cambridge in October.

The band had supported La Roux on tour last year their third single, Jackson's Last Stand, was released in July.
