Sir Paul McCartney offends US officials with Bush joke

by Martin Higgins. Published Tue 08 Jun 2010 14:58, last updated: 24/06/10

Sir Paul McCartney has angered a number of US officials after the joke he made about former president George W. Bush in the White House.

The legendary former Beatle made the quip when receiving the Gershwin Prize for Popular Music from the new president Barack Obama.

McCartney had questioned the former president’s intelligence saying, “After the last eight years it is great to have a president who knows what a library is.”

Marc Thiessen, one of Bush’s former speech writers, has leapt to his onetime employer’s defence saying Bush was in fact “one of the best read presidents in recent history.” Thiessen labelled Sir Paul’s comments as “crass” and “rude.”

The White House minority Leader John Boehner added to this disparaging sentiment and went so far as to call for the 67 year old singer to apologise for his comments saying, “I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of grace and respect he showed in the White House. I hope he’ll apologise to the American people for his conduct which demeaned him, the White House and president Obama.”

A number of Facebook groups have sprouted up either criticising or defending Macca’s comments as the public have their say on the controversial matter.
