Hardly four months after Marvel set the comic book world a blaze by killing off The Human Torch, fans may need to get the tissues handy once more with news that your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man may be sharing the same fate.

The current Spidey storyline, The Death of Spider-Man, is speeding towards its climax in Ultimate Spider-Man #160, to be released in June, and web-heads will be greeted on the pages by a new superhero taking on the webslinger’s mantle.

Editor-in-chief Axel Alonso teased fans about the outcome of the arc, but gave nothing away regarding whether Peter Parker will be killed off, or who the new Spider-Man may be.

‘We called the story ‘Death of Spider-Man’ for a reason,’ He said. ‘This is a huge story that’ll have fans around the world talking for a long time as we set the stage for the debut of our new Spider-Man.’

Marvel has confirmed that the new Spidey will not continue wearing those tired, old arachnid threads, and instead will be kitted out in a brand new costume.

Catch up with the storyline on the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Avengers Vs. Ultimates.

Ultimate Spider-Man 160 will be released in June
